How to Practice Self-Love When Feeling Off-a 3 step process

Life is full of ups and downs, and it’s normal to feel emotionally off from time to time. Whether it’s stress, burnout, or a personal situation, negative emotions can take a toll on our well-being. However, there’s a way to approach these difficult moments with compassion and mindfulness, and it starts with self-love. By following a simple three-step process; feelings check-in, radical honesty, and taking action, you can begin to restore emotional balance and cultivate a deeper connection with yourself. Here’s how to do it:

1. Feelings Check-In: Acknowledge and Name Your Emotions

The first step in this self-love process is to perform a “feelings check-in.” When you’re feeling emotionally off, the last thing you want to do is ignore or suppress your emotions. Instead, the key is to pause and acknowledge what you’re feeling.

Start by asking yourself, “What am I feeling right now?” It may help to sit quietly and let the emotions surface. Is there a sense of sadness, anxiety, frustration, or even anger? Naming your emotions can create a sense of clarity and relief. Bringing awareness to your state of being and questioning how you are feeling creates a little space between you and the feeling. This space creates allows you to feel held & heard. It also helps prevent you from getting overwhelmed by the intensity of what you’re going through.

You might notice that some emotions are more complex, with layers of frustration, disappointment, or confusion. That’s okay! Allow yourself the space to feel whatever arises without judgment. This isn’t about trying to change or fix your feelings; it’s about creating a safe space for yourself to experience them fully.

2. Radical Honesty: Be Honest with Yourself

Once you’ve identified what you’re feeling, the next step is radical honesty. This means being brutally honest with yourself about the thoughts and beliefs that may be contributing to your emotional state. It’s about recognizing patterns and acknowledging truths, even when they’re uncomfortable.

For example, are you feeling off because of an unresolved issue in your life or a difficult conversation you’ve been avoiding? Maybe you’re overwhelmed by unrealistic expectations you’ve set for yourself. Perhaps you haven’t been consistent with your physical self-care which includes getting enough sleep, moving your body, eating whole foods at regular intervals and getting adequate hydration. Radical honesty requires you to peel back the layers and face the truth of why you’re feeling the way you are without sugarcoating it.

This doesn’t mean you have to have all the answers right away. It simply means being honest about what’s happening in your inner world and acknowledging any fears or insecurities you might be carrying. It’s about treating yourself like a trusted friend; offering love and support, while also being open to the truth of the situation.

3. Taking Action: Small Steps to Restore Balance

Finally, it’s time to take action. Emotions are valid, but they also need movement to shift. Taking action is about doing something tangible to help you feel better and restore emotional equilibrium.

This doesn’t mean you have to make drastic changes right away. Small, intentional actions can have a powerful impact. This is the time to head to your self-love toolbox and reach for the tool that will best serve your well-being in this moment.
For example, if you’re feeling stressed, try doing a 10-minute mindfulness meditation, taking a walk in nature, or journaling your thoughts. If you’re feeling disconnected, reach out to a loved one or engage in a hobby that brings you joy.

Taking action is about prioritizing self-care and doing things that nurture your body, mind, and soul. It’s about breaking the cycle of emotional inertia and creating space for healing and growth. By taking small steps, you’ll begin to feel empowered and regain control over your emotional state.

When you’re feeling emotionally off, the three-step self-love process of feelings check-in, radical honesty, and taking action, can be an incredibly powerful way to reconnect with yourself. By acknowledging your emotions, being honest with yourself and taking proactive steps to nurture your well-being, you can begin to heal and regain emotional balance. Remember, self-love is actionable. It requires you to take action to hold your own well-being & happiness in high regard. It’s okay to feel out of sorts sometimes, but with these simple tools, you can navigate through the tough moments with compassion and self-care.
